The Wine
If you don’t yet know about Xinomavro, you’ll soon be thanking me for introducing you.
The rising popularity of Greek wines is being hampered by the difficulty of their pronunciations, so let's start with that. Say "KSEE-no-MAHVA-doh". Xinomavro is grown in many areas of Greece but it's the predominant grape from Macedonia, where conditions allow for optimal ripening by harvest time. Regulations require Xinomavro with AO designation to be aged in oak for one year before release.
The wine shows immediately appealing, high-toned fruits... a tannic red wine that rewards aging for a decade or more. And yet lovers of big reds will discover from the get-go a very nice fun/$ ratio beneath this cork.
The Winery
Vaeni is a large cooperative winery with over 200 smal family growers. It represents over 50% of the local wine production in its region. Production is significant, as the wines are exported globally. But quality remains higher than many cooperatives, a few of whom give the whole group a lesser reputation.
