The Wine
A 2015 Pinot Noir can be pretty long in the tooth. So I raised an eyebrow when it was presented to me. The reply was "it is excellent, a great choice!". They were not wrong! A solid pinot from a respected winemaker.
The Winery
The quote from the winery's website says it all:
"We are a producer of boutique, bespoke wines from singular vineyard sites in California. Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo are the focus of our efforts but by no means will we pass up an opportunity to play in any sandbox that suits our fancy."
First and foremost, Steve Rogstad produces wines that tell a tale of place - the vineyard, the region, the people involved... all the component parts of a wine that deliver its final impression. I think of such wines as 'speaking' with a distinctive regional accent - a dead give-away as to the speaker's home, even to the casual observer.
This final quote from the owner/winemaker says it best:
The launching of my eponymous label allows me to entertain more fully my zest for Pinot and its almost unparalleled ability to, chameleon-like, express its plae of origin. In essence, it's a canvas that allows me to explore that strange and uncomfortable notion we call terroir, through these rare, single vineyard offerings.
