Piancornello 2019 Campo della Macchia Rosso Toscana IGT
The Wine
Ripe fruit notes with and hints of pleasant spices, this is a bold and full-bodied blend. A bit rustic, but the ample Tuscan sun shines through this wine, a blend of Sangiovese, Syrah and Colorino.
During its slow, 21-day fermentation / maceration in steel tanks, the wine was pumped-over 2-3 times per day. After racking into steel tanks, the wine completed malolactic fermentation. The wine was then racked into large oak casks and 2nd-year barrels and aged for 6 months to soften the tannic structure.
The Winery
The Pieri family bought the Piancornello estate in 1950. At first, they grew and sold their fruit locally. But in 1991, they began vinifying and selling their estate wines. Piancornello is now owned and operated by Claudio Monaci and Silvia Batazzi.
An 18th-century farmhouse anchors this organically-cultivated estate in the pristine nature of Montalcino, rubbing shoulders with centuries-old olive groves and Brunello vineyards. On their 24 acres of vineyards, Piancornello cultivates predominantly Sangiovese vines with some Ciliegiolo (chee lee-yay geo-low). And because there are over 100 known clones of Sangiovee, they carefully selected the clones for their own climate, soils and weather conditions - those with low yields and looser bunches.
Piancornello’s warmer and drier climate, as compared to the neighboring Chianti region, and proximity to the Mediterranean sea (28 miles away) make this a prized vineyard site.
