Omen Origins 2019 Zinfandel, Sierra Foothills
Omen Origins 2019 Zinfandel, Sierra Foothills
The Wine
A blend of 93% Zinfandeland 7% Petite Sirah. The dominant experience is one of ripe cherries and plums, but with added complexity of freshly-turned earth, cedar and aromatic herbs. Too easy to drink, but take caution as this vintage is much bigger than the last, weighing in at 15.5% ABV it doubles nicely as a dessert wine paired with anything featuring chocolate.
SUSTAINABLE/ORGANIC, VEGAN, NO SO2 ADDED
The Winery
Omen wines is named for an abandoned monastery that sits atop one of the vineyards managed by Atlas Vineyard Management, creators of the Omen line. A project of winemaker Alexandre Remy and his team, Omen produces lush, round and ripe wines.
You can find this winery just south of Placerville, CA at an elevation of 2,400 ft in the Fair Play AVA. Here in the higher elevations the soils run deep with granite - a geological phenomenon that develops grapes destined for intense wines. This area has been home to some incredible vineyards that were originally planted around the time of the California Gold Rush. Exactly the sort of growing area, and wine discovery, that is common to our team of wine sleuths.
