The Wine
Manually harvested so only the best clusters are taken, the grapes are then crushed using a traditional crank press and straw mats made from a rough grass called 'esparto'. The wine flows into tanks where native yeast fermentation occurs before aging for nine months sur lie.
Comparisons to Grüner veltliner come to mind in describing this wine, as the two share a similarly rich yet acid-driven mouthfeel and a white flower, orange zest, and white pepper flavor profile, all of which predict an ability to develop further with aging. I say 'further' because it has already seen long bottle aging before release - note the 2018 vintage and know this is their current release!
The Winery
The Molina Real winery is the brainchild of two Spanish dreamers - Telmo Rodrigues and Pablo Eguzkiza, modern day Don Quixotes. But instead of tilting at windmills, they grew increasingly intent on reviving Spain's once great "Mountain Wines" from their Málaga region. Such wines once competed with the best of Germany and France in the 1700s.
Their dream fed on their voracious curisosity and a steady diet of books about the old ways of making wine from the native varieties. They took further juice when they read the venerable wine writer, Hugh Johnson, who said that an aged "Mountain Wine" was the best wine he'd ever had. Their fate was sealed.
Keep in mind that, when they started production in 1994, the "International Varietals" were all the rage. All their neighboring vineyards in Málaga (MAH laga), their seaside region of Spain, were being planted to the usual varieties - Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet and etc.
But they looked into each other's eyes, nodded, grasped hands and drove off the cliff... which is all the hyperbole I could muster to describe their difficulty in bucking the local wisdom and committing to their dream of revivifying their local grape varieties. With vineyards found at altitudes of 1,600 - 3,300 feet, they enjoy great sunshine for ripening, and cool nights to preserve mouthwatering acidity. I think you'll enjoy this wine!
