The Wine

A single-vineyard wine (!) located between the sea and the mountains in Terrerazo, a town in Valencia, Spain (see map). The Finca Calvestra vineyard, owned by the winery, is located at 3,000 feet of elevation, and is worked by hand. Certified orgranic.

This is wine is refreshingly light but with intense aromatics featuring tropical fruits, apricot and peach notes. Its palate follows the lead provided by the aromatics and leads the taster into a long and lingering finish.

Spanish White blend: Merseguera 60% / Malvasia 15% / Xarel-lo 15% / Viognier 10%. The wine is aromatic, complex and and refreshing, all at once!

The Winery

Toni Sarrion (photo) is the mind behind this bodega, best known for his one-person crusade (quite literally, his quest made him a local outcast) to raise the prestige of the local Bobal grape on the world stage of varietal wines. A refugee from the corporate world, Toni heard the call of the family vineyards and began his enology studies in the mid-90s. After touring the world's great wine regions, he brought back to his humble village the secrets to great wines - a local variety, low yields, minimal intervention, biodiversity in the vineyard, native yeast fermentations in the cellar, minimal use of new wood - and all the techniques we now take for granted but at the time made Toni seem like a mad scientist.

Time has proved him right!
