Mati Fortuna - label design
The eye-catching circle you see on this wine's label is a modern artistic rendition of an old folk belief - the Blessing Eye, the ultimate Greek talisman. It was said that one who was looked over by "Mati Fortuna" would only have good luck and prosperity. It is your everlasting portector and guardian. Great wine, good fortune and under $20? One heckuva deal!

The Wine

The Moschofilero (MOSS coe FEE leh row) is one of the most popular white grapes from Greece. Its wonderful floral scent makes it difficult for the taster to stop swirling and sniffing long enough to start sipping - it's beguiling aromatics are more alluring than most colognes.

But one must, eventually, stop swirling and sniffing to experience the wine's greatest feature - a medium weight and refreshing finish that begs to be paired with figs piped with a soft cheese, prosciutto-wrapped melon, sauteed scallops, sushi, grilled veggies or fish simply grilled and drizzled with lemon, olive oil, minced garlic and fresh herbs (try Oregano or, my favorite, Tarragon).

This wine hails from Mantinia, part of the Peloponnese island, where Moschofilero shows its highest expression. Drink now through 2025.

The Producer
Takis Xigoros made a good living in the marketing of Messinian goods for some 35 years before launching Inomessiniaki winery in 1998. His ambitious goal was to support and promote the superb grape varieties produced by the Messinian vineyards. It was a big bet he placed - although the grapes were known to be of high quality, Inomessiniaki was the first producer from the Kalamata region. Today, Inomessiniaki controls the production process 'from grape to glass' with estate vineyards and collaborating viticulturists.

Takis Xigoros' two sons now run the winery with enthusiasm for their stated goal - 'to express all our love and care through every drop of our wine.'
