The Wine
Black garnet color, with aromas of black cassis, toasted coconut, espresso beans, pepper, and coriander seed. The wine offers a round, vibrant and fruity light-to-medium body. The palate brings mocha, cocoa and barrel spice/vanilla notes. The oak still dominates the finish, though far less so than upon release four years ago.
Aged in 60% new French oak. Estate grown grapes from the Hartwell (Grace) Clone planted to tight, 1 x 2 meter spacing, providing low 3 tons/acre yields. Their unique cooler site (at the base of Atlas Peak in the cool Vichy Springs area), tilts toward the side of vibrant acidity and lively brightness.
A vigorous decanting of this young wine will reveal more nuances that may be hiding within this wine because of its cool-climate area and the drought-stricken vintage. As the wine ages, check the bottle for signs of sediment, at which time the decanting should turn from vigorous to gentle, of course!
350 cases produced. 14.5% ABV. This is a wine for the ages - enjoy now through 2030.
The Winery
Mario Bazan is a great American success story. An immigrant who came to Napa from Oaxaca in 1973 as an 18 year-old who was seeking work in the vineyards. Soon recognized as a tireless and talented worker, demand grew for his services among top wineries such as Phelps, Stags Leap and Mondavi/Opus One. He worked his way up from picker to Tractor Driver to Foreman to Vineyard Manager.
In 1998, Mario started his own vineyard management company (clients included Rudd, Hartwell, Turnbull and Kenzo) which provided him the ability to purchase his own vineyard in 2005. His wife gave up her career as a pediatric dentist to become business manager for the winery. The estate vineyard is planted to the tight 1 X 2 meter spacing that Mario pioneered while at Mondavi To Kalon vineyard, and which is now common among top Napa Cabernet growers.
