The Wine
Organically farmed, this wine is produced in a refreshing, food-friendly style with a well-balanced (<14%) level of alcohol. The wine's bouquet of white tea and floral aromas is hesitant at first, but as the wine warms and unwinds, you'll find delicate essence of apples and wet stones.
The wine is well balanced, with good acidity balancing rich flavors of honeydew melon and tree fruits. The house style is to let the vineyard take center stage, so the winemaker (Bob Swain) takes a supporting role with no flashy flavors of new oak, buttered-popcorn or crème brulée covering up the natural Chardonnay fruit. And with a grape that brings gifts to the finished wine such as Bosc pear and white currant, Bob's style is much appreciated. Produced with no oak or Malolactic conversion.
<1,000 cases produced. Enjoy now through 2023.
The vineyard for Orsianna's white wines is located near Hopland in the eastern part of Mendocino County. At one time, it was owned by orgranic farming pioneers, the Fetzer family, who managed the vineyard for many years. The vines grow on an alluvial fan (geologically, the soils that have eroded off a mountain over millenia) along the northern Russian River, where the vines benefit from cool nights and warm days. The vineyard is owned by Bernie Orsi, one of the three partners in Orsianna, who follows biodynamic and organic practices (non-certified) and dry-farms for sustainability and to improve the flavor profile. Grapes from such vineyards are rarely found in wines costing less than $30.
