Gerard Millet 2023 Sancerre
The Wine
Classic aromas of lemon zest, kaffir lime, wet rock and nectarine supported by the heady perfume of small wild mountain flowers. The palate is brimming with ripe citrus and stone fruit flavors that are framed by sleek a highly focused acid architecture.
Pairing suggestions: pork, seafood, spicy food and the classic match-up, goat cheese!
The appellation of Sancerre is part of the ‘central vineyards’ of the Loire Valley, with almost all of the appellation situated on the left bank of the Loire River, opposite Pouilly Fumé. The region has a continental climate as it is ~400 kilometres from the Atlantic Coast. This location experiences short, hot summers and long, cold winters. Early spring frosts are an annual threat to the vineyards. These vines are grown in chalky soils which provide good drainage, resulting in elegant aromatics and the much prized minerality for which Sancerre is known.
The Winery
The Millet family has been making wine for over five generations, with the sixth generation lining up to take over in the coming years. The Domaine is now run by Gérard and Isabelle, with their son, Steve, waiting in the wings. The estate covers a total of 58 Acres of vineyard, of which 46 are in the Sancerre appellation and 12 in Menetou-Salon.
This family-owned winery has recently invested in new heat exchange equipment to ensure that the grapes and must are cooled to obtain maximum freshness in the wine. Their wines are fresh, pure and show great typicity.
