The Wine
The wine opens with intense aromas that are both floral and fruity, of ripe forest raspberries, ripe bramble berries and black cherries, supported by hints of dark chocolate, cocoa and liquorice. The palate is concentrated and heady, with bold, drying tannins, good intensity and a powerful body - all of which suggest the wine will age for more than a decade to come. As the wine opens up look for additional notes of pomegranate and sweet spices.
Though the winemaking laws in Chateauneuf du Pape allow for the use of more than a dozen local varieties, this one is fairly simple - 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Approx 1,250 cases produced.
The Winery
Domaine Comte de Lauze is a relatively new property in the Southern Rhone Valley as the estate was founded in 1976. Today they own 24 acres of vines in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation, 90% of which is for red wine production with an average vine age of 45 years.
The terroir is clay with limestone with small stones and rocks in the soil - a mixture known to yield aromatic wines with lifted fruit notes.
