Dom de Chenepierre 2022 Beaujolais Moulin a Vent "Vignes de 1913"
Dom de Chenepierre 2022 Beaujolais Moulin a Vent "Vignes de 1913"
The Wine
The wine is dark and intense, as one would expect from 111-year-old vines ('Vines of 1913')!
The wine was raised in old neutral foudre, allowing small amounts of oxygen to soften the wine without lending any woody notes. In its youth, this wine shows floral and fruity notes, featuring violet and cherry aromas. But as it ages you'll find it develops aromas of iris, wilted roses, spice and ripe fruit with notes of undergrowth and truffles - these are tannic, structured wines built to age for a decade or more.
"Traditional top-tier Moulin-a-Vent at its best - Yields were way down versus 2021, and it is what we would call a five-star vintage, with enviable sap, complexity, and overall balance. Snap up all of the 2022 vintage, top-address Cru Beaujolais you come across this year. " - JM
The Winery
Moulin-à-Vent is a prestigious cru within the Beaujolais region. It's named for the historic windmill that has been part of the scenery here for centuries. This visual icon has helped make Moulin-à-Vent one of the most recognized crus around the globe. Close to the border of Burgundy, on the northern side of the Beaujolais region, the Gamay-based wines from this region are known for their concentration and tannic structure.
Not to geek out too much on geology, but there is one thing you should know about the soils here - they are predominantly pink granite, which is fine for the vines, but it is streaked with manganese, which is not! This mineral is toxic to the vines, reducing both leafy vegetation and fruit production. And it's this lower yield that creates such intense flavors in the harvested grapes. Funny how nature works, isn't it?
Christophe Lapierre farms 25 acres split between plots in Chénas and Moulin-à-Vent using very traditional winemaking practices. Christophe makes some of the most charming and authentic Beaujolais wines that you’ll drink.
