Bodegas Pinuaga 2022 Tinto (Garnacha/Tempranilo)
Bodegas Pinuaga 2022 Tinto (Garnacha/Tempranilo)
The Wine
50% Garnacha (AKA Grenache) with the remaining half a local Cencible clone of Tempranillo which produces smaller grapes and silky tannins. The vines are planted at half a mile above sea level in two plots that are 8 and 40 years old, respectively.
Winemaking: Guided into stainless steel vats by gravity flow, the juice went through spontaneous fermentation with minimal pump overs and punch downs to preserve the high-toned aromatics lent by the clay/sandy soils of these high altitude vineyards. Bottled with very Low total SO2 (25-30 mg/L).
2,500 cases produced.
The Winery
Bodegas Pinuaga is located on a plateau half a mile(!) above the Spanish region of Toledo. As is true for most of the wines we share with you, this is from a family-owned, organic winery that dates back to 1960, when Esther Pinuaga's grandfather built the winery in the center of the city, which was common practice back then. The family lost that winery when they lost Grandpa, but the vineyards remained and the fruit was sold to other producers until the Pinuaga estate, as we know it today, was built in the center of the vineyards.
Esther is a leader in Spain's organic farming movement, the co-founder and long-time President of the Spanish Association of Organic Winemakers. Recently she has become part of a movement that works for more respectful pruning - an approach with the aim of improving the vine's long-term health and viability in our changing environment.
